These ingenious inventions make sea swimming a real joy and a lot easier if you’re near a beach that is choppy in terms of surf or populated by other water sports enthusiasts.

In this article, we’ll dive into the best tidal pools in the UK, ensuring a memorable wild swimming adventure for all.

First, a massive caveat. We’re lucky enough to live right on the doorstep of one of the best tidal pools/tidal lidos not only in the UK but in the ENTIRE PLANET, so expect a little bias when you get to get to the section about Walpole Bay Lido…

What is a tidal pool?

First of all, let’s get into a bit of detail about what tidal pools actually are.

Tidal pools, or sea pools are manmade constructions built close to the sea, allowing them to harness the incoming and outgoing tides. During high tide, seawater is channeled into the lido, filling it with pristine saltwater. As the tide retreats, the lido gradually empties, creating a controlled environment for swimmers. Tidal lidos provide a unique and refreshing swimming experience, combining the benefits of seawater with the safety and convenience of a swimming pool. They often feature amenities like sunbathing areas, changing facilities, and stunning coastal views, making them popular destinations for both locals and visitors seeking a blend of natural beauty and an authentic sea swimming experience.

PRO TIP: Given that tidal pools are adjacent to the sea, temperatures can fluctuate quickly, whether this is through changes due to water temperature or from costal winds. Even in the summertime, we’d recommend donning a good swimming robe to ensure you’re able to warm up quickly if things get nippy.
