The Rivelin Valley is a popular scenic spot to the west of Sheffield that connects the city to the Peak District. It offers some lovely nature trails along the River Rivelin – great for wildlife spotting.
On the western corner of the trail near the Packhorse Bridge and Rails Road lies a plunge pool which serves as a great respite if you’re intent on walking the length of the trail from Sheffield proper.
There are some great spots along the Riverlin Valley Nature and Heritage Trail and you can explore old dams, waterwheels, mills and all kinds of wildlife along the way.
The plunge pool is surrounded by many relics of Sheffield’s illustrious history, and provides a refreshing and peaceful place to relax and enjoy nature.
The water can get pretty nippy regardless of the season, so make sure you’re ready to keep warm with a swimming robe among other things!
How to Get to the Rivelin Valley Plunge Pool

By car
Enter the postcode S6 6GF into your sat nav, which will take you to the car park at the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group just off Rails Road. The plunge pool is just a short walk from the Packhorse Bridge across the river.
You can also park up further up from the plunge pool on River Valley Road if you want to enjoy a walk down the trail before your swim.
By public transport
The nearest train station is Sheffield which is a few miles east of the Rivelin Valley Trail. Get on the 257 bus to Bakewell from Pond Street and head get off at Manchester Road/Rivelin Valley Road after about 15 minutes (traffic depending). The plunge pool is a short walk from here.
By bike
Cycles aren’t permitted on the footpaths that hug the River Riverlin along the trail, though you can use the adjacent bridleways that run through the woods on the way to Rails Road by the plunge pool.

The Rivelin Valley Nature and Heritage Trail is a great spot for an afternoon of walks and wildlife spotting. Head further west and you’ll eventually reach the Rivelin Reservoir and the Wyming Brook Nature Reserve.
