You’ve probably seen similarly-named articles make the rounds before on various news publications around this time of year. As temperatures rise and the need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for some nature (and ideally, a cooling, calming swim!) rises too, many often look to escape the capital for some respite and a reset.
With this in mind, we thought we’d compile some of our favourite wild swimming spots near London for your delectation.
Now when we say “wild swimming near London” we are loosely looking at spots that are roughly an hour or two (max) away from the capital by car or public transport. River Thames at Pangbourne, Berkshire
Located approximately an hour west of London, the River Thames at Pangbourne offers a serene setting for a dip. The water here is clean and the surrounding countryside is lovely. Get a train straight to Pangbourne Station or park up nearby in the village. You can start your swim from the scenic Pangbourne Meadows.

Frensham Great Pond, Surrey
Just over an hour’s drive from London, Frensham Great Pond in Surrey is a popular spot for swimmers. This large, sandy-bottomed lake is surrounded by heathland and pine forests, making it a perfect spot for a summer swim. The pond has designated swimming areas and is known for its clear waters and family-friendly atmosphere. Get a train to Farnham followed by a bus, or drive straight down and park up in the adjacent Bacon Lane. It can get pretty busy over summer, so get down early!

Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
Henley-on-Thames, around an hour and a half from London and easily accessible by train, is famous for its regatta, but it’s also a fantastic wild swimming spot. The river here is wide and gentle, with several entry points. The Marsh Lock area is particularly popular for swimmers. The charming town and scenic riverbanks add to the appeal.
Barcombe Mills, East Sussex
Get a train down to Lewes and then take a bus or drive about an hour and a half south from London and you’ll end up in Barcombe Mills, a lovely area for picnicking, boating, walking and wild swimming alike. Fordwich, River Stour, Kent
One of our absolute favourites. Fordiwch claims to be the smallest town in the UK, though offers all the hallmarks of a classic Kentish village with all the trimmings. There are two cracking pubs and great walks along the River Stour to and from Canterbury which is just an hours’ train from London.

Olney Swimming Steps, River Great Ouse, Buckinghamshire
Just outside Milton Keynes lies this popular Buckinghamshire wild swimming sport. It’s easier to drive here, though you are rewarding with stunning Buckinghamshire countryside and an easy access point to enter the river via a series of man-made steps.

River Lee Country Park, Hertfordshire
Situated about an hour from London the River Lee Country Park offers multiple lakes and river stretches perfect for wild swimming and open water swimming. The Dobbs Weir area is particularly popular, known for its clean water and lovely picnic spots. The park’s extensive trails and wildlife add to the experience. Londoners can also reach it with ease via the Overground line which serves the adjacent Cheshunt station.
The River Colne, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire
Less than an hour from central London, the River Colne in Rickmansworth is a hidden gem for wild swimmers. The Bury Lake and Stocker’s Lake are popular spots, with the latter being part of a nature reserve. The calm, clear waters and the peaceful surroundings make it a delightful escape. Rickmansworth is also easy to get to from London by train so why not head out this weekend?

Cliveden Reach, River Thames, Berkshire
About an hour and a half from London, Cliveden Reach on the River Thames is renowned for its beauty. The section of the river below Cliveden House is particularly inviting, with deep, clean water and scenic views of the estate’s woodlands and gardens.
Pavenham at the River Great Ouse, Bedfordshire
Situated just outside of Bedford, this spot on the River Great Ouse in the village of Pavenham is idyllic for an afternoon spent picnicking and wild swimming.

What About Wild Swimming Spots in London?
While it may help, you don’t necessarily have to get out of the capital to experience wild swimming. There are in fact a number of wild swimming spots located within London too.
