The River Hamble weaves through the south Hampshire countryside before entering Southampton Water in between the settlements of Warsash and Hamble-le-Rice.

A few miles upstream before it blends into the sea lies a perfectly secluded spot that sits just on the edge of the River Hamble Country Park.

Working your way through the lovely wooded park will leave you to a secluded beach (use the River Hamble Pontoon pin for guidance) that is a real gem in terms of hidden swimming spots in Hampshire, only a stone’s throw from Southampton.

How to Get to the River Hamble at Hedge End

By car

There isn’t a direct route to the spot by car as it lies on the riverbank of the River Hamble Country Park. There is however parking at the country park if you enter the postcode SO31 1BH into your sat nav and head towards the Barn at Barnfield cafe.

From here, follow the woodland path eastward before arriving at the riverbank.

By public transport

The nearest train stations to this secluded wild swimming spot are Burlesdown and Hedge End respectively, which sit a few miles east of Southampton.

Burlesdon station is likely your best bet, as once you’re out of the urban area you can follow the banks of the River Hamble northwards until you find your preferred swimming spot.

By bike

There are some lovely cycle routes in and around the River Hamble Valley that offer the opportunity to combine a bike ride with a swim and some lovely pub stops along the way.
