Northamptonshire is blessed with plenty of rivers that run through it and offers plenty of wild swimming spots within its borders, one notable one being this spot by the River Nene at the pretty market town of Oundle.

This stretch of the River Nene is wide and flat and is surrounded by idyllic green fields on either side.

Access to the water is doable either side of the Oundle North Bridge in the stretch of the river to the north of the town.

This is a brilliantly peaceful spot in rural Northamptonshire that offers brilliant conditions for wild swimming in an open stretch of water.

How to Get to the River Nene at Oundle

By car

Head to Station Road in the north of the town (PE8 4DE) and enter the river on either side of the Oundle North Bridge. There are also a number of good access points running along the Oundle North Bridge all the way to neighbouring village of Cotterstock to the north.

By public transport

If you’re coming via public transport, it’s better to access the River Nene near the Oundle North Bridge which is closer to the town (the rowing club is a little further out).

Getting a train from Peterborough, you can take the X4 Gold bus (around 25 minutes) which will drop you off right by the bridge.

By bike

The area around Oundle and the River Nene, known as the Nene Valley, is set up perfectly for cycling and there are plenty of routes to explore that hug the River Nene and allow you explore plenty of beauty spots nearby.

There plenty of cycle routes documented on the Nene Valley websites, with one highlight being the Oundle Rural Circular Ride which takes you around various spots along the River Nene.

As we’ve mentioned, the Nene Valley has plenty to explore on foot, by bike, or indeed by swimming if you fancy swimming upstream in the direction of Cotterstock.
